Reflective Ribbon
Reflective trim that holds its edge.
Three ribbon constructions on woven webbing — sew-on laminated, heat transfer face and rainbow — specified by base, width and reflectivity for workwear, sportswear and bag programmes.
What we supply
Reflective ribbon is the trim used where reflective tape would be too stiff: a hem that has to fold, a cap edge, a bag outline, a narrow line down a sleeve. The reflective face is carried on a woven webbing, so the ribbon can be sewn without the reflective layer breaking down at the stitch. The three constructions below differ in base and in reflective face — that is what decides which one suits a given garment.

Woven webbing, sewn on
Sew-On Reflective Ribbon
RS-F-RB-01 / -02
High visibility reflective tape bonded along a woven webbing, then sewn onto the garment. The trim follows hems, pocket flaps and shoulder lines where a flat reflective tape is too stiff for the seam.
- Fluorescent yellow, red and green by day; silver reflective face along the full length
- Grosgrain for a firm edge on jackets and caps, tricot for a softer hand on knits and bags
- Up to 420 cd/(lx·m²) retroreflective performance
- 5 cm standard width, cut to length or supplied continuous
- Sewn on, so no press equipment is needed on the line

Sharper edge, lighter ribbon
Reflective Ribbon with Heat Transfer Face
RS-F-RB-03 / -04
Webbing carrying a heat transfer reflective face instead of a laminated reflective fabric — a sharper reflective edge and a lighter ribbon for high-volume hi-vis programmes.
- Heat transfer reflective face, up to 420 cd/(lx·m²)
- Grosgrain for jackets and caps, polyester oxford for vests and bags
- Narrow cuts stay flat, so the ribbon does not curl at the edge
- Cut lengths 1.5 x 5 cm, 2 x 5 cm, or to spec
- Sewn on; daytime colour matched to the garment

Black by day, rainbow at night
Rainbow Reflective Ribbon
RS-F-RB-05
A grosgrain ribbon that reads as plain black in daylight and turns iridescent when light hits it — a reflective trim line on sportswear, caps and bags without a silver band across the design.
- Black in daylight, rainbow under headlights or a phone torch
- Grosgrain base holds a crisp edge on caps and structured panels
- Narrow widths 2 x 1.5 cm and 2 x 5 cm, or to spec
- Sewn on, so no press equipment is needed on the line
- Base webbing width and colour made to order

FAQ | Reflective ribbon
What buyers ask before specifying a reflective ribbon — ribbon versus tape, base choice, width, brightness and how the trim behaves once it is sewn and washed.
What is the difference between reflective ribbon and reflective tape?
Reflective tape is a reflective face on a thin backing that is usually heat pressed or sewn directly onto the garment. Reflective ribbon is that same reflective face carried on a woven webbing — grosgrain, tricot or oxford — so it has a structural edge, can be folded or run through a hem, and takes a stitch without the reflective face delaminating at the seam. If the trim has to hold a shape or be visible as a defined line, it is ribbon rather than tape.
Should I choose the sewn-on ribbon or the ribbon with a heat transfer face?
Both are attached by sewing, so the choice is about the reflective face rather than the method. The laminated sew-on ribbon has a softer, more textile reflective face, which suits garments that flex and fold — hems, pocket flaps, bag edges. The heat transfer face gives a sharper reflective edge and a lighter ribbon, which suits high volumes of straight trim lines on vests, jackets and caps. Where the ribbon sits on a tight curve, the laminated face conforms more easily.
Which base should I pick: grosgrain, tricot or polyester oxford?
Grosgrain is a ribbed woven tape with a firm hand: it holds a crisp edge on collars, caps and structured panels and resists curling when cut narrow. Tricot is a knitted base with more stretch and a softer drape, which suits knitted garments and bags where a stiff edge would pucker the seam. Polyester oxford is the flat, lightweight option for vests and bags at volume. If you are unsure, the deciding question is what happens to the seam when the garment stretches — send the fabric and the ribbon is tested on it.
What widths and cut lengths are available?
Standard width is 5 cm, supplied continuous or cut to length. Narrow ribbon runs 1.5 x 5 cm and 2 x 5 cm, with 2 x 5 cm and 5 x 2 cm common on hi-vis garment programmes. Widths outside these are made to the garment spec — the constraint is usually the reflective face rather than the webbing, so confirm the width before the trim layout is fixed.
How bright is reflective ribbon compared with reflective fabric?
Reflectivity is quoted in cd/(lx·m²). The ribbon constructions here reach up to 420, which is the range used on hi-vis workwear programmes. What matters on a finished garment is how much of the ribbon is visible to the driver — a narrow ribbon at 420 can read less brightly at distance than a wider ribbon at a lower grade, so the width and the layout are decided together rather than from the number alone.
Does reflective ribbon survive domestic washing?
Wash performance depends on the construction, the base webbing and the sewing, so it is confirmed per build rather than quoted as one figure for the range. The reflective face on a sewn ribbon is not exposed to the same abrasion as a heat pressed tape, because the stitch line sits on the webbing and not through the reflective film. Tell us the wash programme — temperature and cycle count — and the construction is matched to it.
Is the rainbow ribbon actually black in daylight?
Yes. The base reads as plain black in normal light, and the iridescent rainbow appears only when light is returned toward the viewer — headlights, a torch, a camera flash. That is what makes it usable as a design trim on sportswear and streetwear: by day it is a black line, at night it lights up. It is a visual effect rather than a certified hi-vis grade, so it is specified for fashion and sports trims, not for EN ISO 20471 garments.
Can the ribbon be supplied on rolls, or cut to fixed lengths?
Both. Continuous rolls suit a cutting room that already runs a trim line; fixed cut lengths suit a sewing floor that wants the trim pre-cut to the panel. Cut lengths should be agreed against the actual seam allowance, because a ribbon cut to the visible length will finish short once the ends are turned in.
Can you match the ribbon colour to our garment?
Yes — the daytime colour of the webbing is the matching point, not the reflective face. Fluorescent yellow, red and green are standard; other colours are matched to a submitted swatch or a Pantone reference. Send the garment fabric rather than a screen colour, because fluorescent dyes read very differently on screen and under the lighting the garment is worn in.
Can we test the ribbon on our own fabric before ordering?
Yes. Send the base fabric from the production lot, not a swatch from a different batch, along with the sewing method and the wash programme. The ribbon is sewn on the real substrate, washed and checked for seam integrity and residual reflectivity. A test on the actual fabric is the only reliable answer, because seam puckering and stitch pull-through change with the substrate.
Reflectivity is given in cd/(lx·m²). Wash performance is confirmed per construction against the wash programme supplied with the order and depends on the base fabric and the sewing. The rainbow ribbon is a visual effect and is not offered as a certified hi-vis grade. Test documentation for a build is confirmed with the quotation.
Send the fabric and the trim layout.
Tell us the base fabric, the width, the daytime colour and the wash programme, and the answer comes back with the construction, the cut length and a price.
