Glow-in-the-Dark Tape for PPE Apparel & Workwear
Visible in the headlight. Still visible when it switches off.
Reflective tape only works while a light is pointed at it. Photoluminescent tape keeps working after that light is gone — so a garment stays identifiable in the two moments that matter on a night site.
Why these solutions are reliable
Luminous performance is not a coating that wears off. It is built into the construction, and it recharges every time the garment sees light.
- Photoluminescent performance that recharges on every light exposure, with no power source
- Reflective and luminous performance combined in a single construction
- Sew-on, heat transfer and segmented builds for different garment processes
- Widths from 1 cm to 140 cm, with segmented stripe layouts made to order
- Aramid-based flame-retardant options for FR protective clothing
Luminous materials we supply
Seven constructions, each for a different garment process. Every one of them is available in the widths your pattern needs.

- Suitable for logos, markings and functional visibility elements
- Compatible with standard heat press processes
- Maintains glow performance and wash durability

04 / 07
Luminous Piping & Trim Tape
RS-F-GL-04

- Combines luminous glow and reflective performance for multi-condition visibility
- Flame-retardant construction suitable for high-risk PPE applications
- Heat transfer application supports a clean appearance
- Segmented design enhances flexibility and wearer comfort
- Customisable width, pattern and colour

07 / 07
High-Performance Luminous Reflective Tape
RS-F-GL-07
Strong reflectivity under headlights, then luminous visibility once the light source is gone. For crews that work between lit and unlit areas.
- Dual visibility performance for complex safety scenarios
- Enhances recognition from multiple angles and distances
- Ideal for road maintenance, construction and night operations
- Tough surface for repeated handling and outdoor exposure
Where luminous visibility makes a difference
Three environments where reflective alone is not enough, because the light source is not always there.
PPE & Safety Workwear
Hi-vis jackets, coveralls, trousers and vests that must stay identifiable when site lighting fails or a worker steps out of the lamp.
Outdoor & Emergency Equipment
Bags, covers, harnesses and emergency gear that may sit away from any light source for hours. Luminous trim keeps it locatable without power.
Construction & Road Maintenance
Night crews and traffic management teams moving between headlights and complete darkness. Dual visibility covers both states with one tape.
Choosing the right construction
Match the garment process first, then the performance requirement.
| Garment or requirement | Recommended construction |
|---|---|
| Woven workwear, stitched | Sew-on luminous reflective tape |
| FR protective clothing | Aramid-based flame-retardant luminous tape |
| Logos and fine markings | Luminous heat transfer vinyl |
| Seams and design lines | Luminous piping and trim |
| Flexibility and breathability | Segmented luminous reflective tape |
| Road and construction crews | High-performance dual visibility tape |
FAQ | Glow-in-the-dark material
What buyers ask before specifying a luminous material — how the glow works, how it differs from reflective, base choice, flame retardancy and wash life.
How does glow-in-the-dark tape work?
The tape stores light while it is lit and releases it slowly afterwards. The pigment is charged by ambient or artificial light and then emits for a period once the light is removed. Nothing is powered and nothing switches on — which is why it keeps a garment identifiable after the headlights have passed, when a purely reflective tape has already gone dark.
What is the difference between luminous and reflective tape?
Reflective tape returns light back to its source, so it only works while something is shining at it. Luminous tape emits stored light, so it works with no light source at all — but it is much dimmer than a reflection. The two answer different questions, and a build that needs both visibility at a distance and visibility in total darkness normally uses both.
How long does the afterglow last?
It depends on the pigment loading, the base and how the tape was charged, so it is confirmed per construction rather than quoted as a single number. What matters for specification is the brightness at the moment that matters — a bright first minute and a long tail are different requirements. Tell us the exposure condition and the duration you need, and the construction is chosen against it.
Which base should we choose: TC, aramid or hot melt?
TC is the general-purpose woven base for garments and accessories. Aramid is for PPE that has to be flame-retardant as well as visible — it is the base used on the FR luminous tape and the FR luminous reflective build. Hot melt is a thermoplastic adhesive base, used where the tape is applied by heat rather than sewn.
When do we need a flame-retardant luminous tape?
When the garment has to meet a fire-resistance requirement as well as a visibility one: PPE for hazardous workplaces, utilities, welding-adjacent work, oil and gas. The FR base is a different material, not a coating, so the flame behaviour does not wash or wear off.
Should the tape be sewn on or heat applied?
Sewn on for woven tape and piping: it follows a seam and can be replaced. Heat applied for vinyl and segmented builds: it sits flat on the panel with no stitch line, which is what most decoration and large-panel applications want. Heat application needs a press and a controlled temperature, so it is a production decision, not a purchasing one.
Does the glow survive washing?
The pigment survives; the bond is what fails first. On a sewn tape the stitch carries the load, so wash life is set by the base and the seam. On a heat-applied vinyl the adhesive and the edge are the weak points. Wash performance is confirmed per construction against the programme supplied with the order.
Is luminous tape used outdoors, and does sunlight degrade it?
It is used outdoors — road maintenance, emergency equipment, outdoor workwear — and daylight is what charges it. Long-term UV exposure is the real question, and it is answered by the base and the pigment grade rather than by the glow effect itself, so it is confirmed for the specific construction and exposure.
Can we test luminous tape on our own garment before ordering?
Yes. Send the panel fabric and say whether the tape is sewn or heat applied, and the sample is built the same way and tested for charge, afterglow and wash. Glow performance changes with the substrate and the application method, so a test on the real construction is the only reliable answer.
Not sure which luminous tape fits your product?
Send us the garment, the standard it has to meet and your care programme. We will confirm the matching construction, the width and a quotation.
