Overview

Gauntlet gloves in leather with a long cuff that covers the wrist and forearm. The point of the long cuff is spatter: it runs down the arm rather than into the sleeve opening. Leather is still the right answer for welding because it chars rather than melts.

Construction

  • Leather palm and back
  • Long gauntlet cuff
  • Heat resistant stitching at the seams
  • Unlined for dexterity, or lined to specification

Where it fits

MIG, TIG and stick welding, grinding and any hot work with spatter. Glove selection for welding must match the process: a gauntlet for stick, a thinner glove where TIG needs feel. Confirm the required EN 388 and EN 407 levels at order stage.

The gauntlet is the feature, and the seam is what fails

Spatter runs down the arm, so the cuff has to cover the wrist and forearm rather than stop at the wrist. Leather takes the heat and the abrasion, and the seam is where the glove gives way first: stitching with the wrong thread opens before the leather wears through. Leather also stiffens and shrinks with repeated heat, losing dexterity before it loses protection, which is why welders replace gloves on feel rather than waiting for a hole to appear.

What to confirm before ordering

  • The hazard, not the product name: Cut, abrasion, tear, puncture, chemical and heat are separate tests. Naming the hazard is what lets the right test result be supplied.
  • The level your risk assessment requires: For cut, that is the cut level letter or number. Without it a glove is chosen by feel and then justified afterwards.
  • Grip surface: Dry, oily or wet parts change which coating is correct.
  • Size run and cuff length: A glove that is too long at the cuff catches; too short and it gaps at the wrist.
  • Any food-contact or medical requirement: Those are separate approvals with their own documentation.

Compliance note

Glove performance is a row of test results, not a single rating. Abrasion, cut, tear and puncture are separate tests on separate scales, and a glove that scores well on one can score poorly on another. A performance row is not printed on this page because it belongs to a specific test report for a specific article. State the hazard and the level your risk assessment requires, and the corresponding test report is supplied with the order; that report is what a safety auditor will accept in place of a claim on a website.

Samples and lead time

Sample pieces are supplied before a bulk order so your team can check fit, finish and marking on the actual article. Standard lead time is 2–4 weeks from order confirmation.
