Overview

A reflective fabric that returns light in black. On a dark garment the trim is effectively invisible in daylight and only appears when a light is aimed at it — the reflective element is there without being seen.

That is the opposite of what a safety stripe is bought for, and it is the point. Many products need reflective behaviour for a legal or practical reason but do not want the garment to look like PPE in the showroom. A black return lets the same panel serve both without a visible silver band.

Specification

  • Code: RS-F-FB-16
  • Reflected colour: Black
  • Base: Reflective textile
  • Width: Up to 140 cm
  • Attachment: Sewn or heat applied
  • Colour matching: Against an approved sample at order

A black return is dimmer than a white one

A surface that returns black is returning very little light in absolute terms — it reads as black because that is what reaches the eye, not because it is bright. Against a white or silver return it is visibly weaker, so it suits accent graphics and branding rather than a large area that has to be seen from a distance. If the requirement is to be noticed at distance, a plain silver element does that job better and should sit on the garment as well.

Typical use

Fashion outerwear, streetwear, bags and accessories where the reflective element should be hidden until it is lit.

It is also used on corporate and event garments where a visible silver stripe would be off-brand but a night-time reflective accent is still wanted.

What to confirm before ordering

  • Use case: accent and branding, or a large visible area — a black return is the dimmer option.
  • Approved sample: judge it against the actual garment colour; on a non-black cloth a black return can read as a dark grey stripe.
  • Width and slitting: up to 140 cm, or slit to trim width.
  • Attachment: sewn or heat applied — choose one and keep it.
  • Wash cycle: domestic or industrial.

Compliance note

Colour and effect layers sit in the optical path and absorb most of the returned light, so a surface like this does not reach the 330 cd/(lx·m²) that EN ISO 20471 requires for retroreflective material, at any grade. It is specified for appearance, not for a certified hi-vis claim.

Where a garment needs a 20471 claim, a plain silver element has to carry it. Mixing a colour element for design with a compliant element for performance is standard practice — the two have to be planned together at design stage rather than reconciled afterwards.
