Overview

A base cloth printed so that only the printed areas glow, letting a logo, a pattern or a graphic carry the photoluminescent effect instead of the whole panel. The artwork is supplied by the buyer.

This replaces die-cutting with print. A glowing logo that would otherwise be cut from a luminous sheet and sewn on becomes one printed panel: no seam allowance, no edge to curl, no risk of a cut letter sitting crooked. What changes is the artwork brief — it has to be drawn for a print process rather than for a fabric embellishment.

Specification

  • Base fabric: Polyester textile
  • Print: Customer artwork, printed to glow
  • Glow colour: Yellow-green as standard
  • Width: Up to 140 cm
  • Artwork: Vector, supplied to the print specification
  • Afterglow: Confirmed per build

Why the artwork decides the result

The glow survives where the ink lands and disappears where the base shows through, so the print defines the luminous shape. Line weight therefore has a floor: a hairline that reads correctly in a PDF can fall below what the screen holds reliably, and fine negative space fills in. Send vector artwork against the print specification rather than a finished mock-up, and agree the line weight before the first proof — a glow proof approved on screen tells you nothing about how much light the panel will actually store.

Typical use

Branded safety apparel, streetwear graphics, promotional textiles and children's product where the glow has to carry a design rather than cover a panel.

It also suits event and campaign garments that need a second life after dark without adding a separate trim: the graphic itself becomes the visible element once the lights go down.

What to confirm before ordering

  • Artwork format and line weight: vector, to the print specification — hairlines and fine negative space are the usual cause of a failed first proof.
  • Charging condition: how much light the panel receives before use sets how much it can emit. State the expected exposure so the build can be matched.
  • Afterglow requirement: duration and brightness are confirmed per build, not fixed by the base cloth.
  • Print coverage: more printed area means more glow but also more ink; agree the balance on the proof.
  • Wash cycle: printed luminous surfaces age differently from a plain luminous sheet — state domestic or industrial.

Compliance note

Photoluminescence and retroreflection are different mechanisms. A glow surface stores light and emits it slowly; it does not return a beam back to its source, so it is not a qualifying retroreflective material under EN ISO 20471 and cannot be counted toward a hi-vis claim.

Both effects can appear on one garment, but they are assessed separately: the glow layer for visibility after dark with no light source, a plain silver element for retroreflection. Afterglow brightness and duration are confirmed per build rather than assumed.
