Overview

Reflective piping on a spandex backing: it stretches with the seam instead of resisting it, which is what a rigid piping does on a knit. Single sided, silver by day, 2 cm as standard.

Piping sits where a garment moves most — armholes, side panels, cuffs. A rigid piping there fights the seam, puckers at the curve and eventually splits the reflective face along the fold. A spandex backing recovers with the seam, so the trim follows the curve instead of arguing with it.

Specification

  • Code: RS-F-SP-03
  • Daytime colour: Silver
  • Backing: Spandex fabric
  • Reflectivity: 250 CPL or 330 CPL
  • Width: 2 cm (sizes customizable)
  • Attachment: Sew on

Two grades, and the difference is compliance

This piping is made in 250 CPL and 330 CPL. The gap is not cosmetic: 330 CPL is where EN ISO 20471 sets the floor for retroreflective material, so the higher grade keeps a certified garment inside the rules while the lower one does not. Choosing between them is therefore a compliance decision first and a cost decision second — the same trim, two different answers to the same specification.

Typical use

Sportswear, caps and outerwear trims — anywhere a reflective edge has to follow a curve without stiffening it.

It is also used on garments where silver by day is deliberately preferred: the trim reads as sportswear detail rather than as safety equipment, which matters on consumer product sold on design.

What to confirm before ordering

  • 250 CPL or 330 CPL: the first compliance question, not the last. If the finished garment needs a 20471 claim, only the 330 grade keeps that open.
  • Finished width: 2 cm standard, other widths to spec — piping width is measured after folding, so state which dimension you mean.
  • Seam allowance: confirm how much of the piping sits inside the seam, since that part is not visible.
  • Stretch direction: confirm the axis the seam loads so the backing can be oriented.
  • Wash cycle: domestic or industrial; an elastic backing ages differently under each.

Compliance note

The two grades are not cosmetic variants. 330 CPL meets the EN ISO 20471 floor for retroreflective material; 250 CPL does not. Choosing between them is a compliance decision before it is a cost decision.

The standard certifies the finished garment, not the trim, so the 330 grade makes a claim possible rather than automatic — construction, background material and the area and placement of the reflective elements are still assessed.
